The Irua Garden Estate Program is a traditional Gikuyu circumcision camp that guides boys into manhood under the mentorship of parents, atiiri (mentors), and a respected Council of Elders (COE). Originally held at the owner’s previous residence in Garden Estate, it has since moved to Varsity Ville Estate (off Eastern Bypass in Ruiru) where he currently resides. More than a ceremony, it is a cultural institution — rooted in values, discipline, and community responsibility, safeguarded by elders with deep knowledge of tradition and culture.
Transforming Boys Through Gikuyu Circumcision Rites

Nurturing boys into men
The Irua Garden Estate Program provides a carefully guided journey of initiation where boys are nurtured in responsibility, discipline, and cultural identity. Beyond the camp, this experience prepares them to step into adulthood with values that last a lifetime. By preserving Gikuyu traditions and instilling them in the next generation, the program safeguards heritage while shaping young men who are ready to serve their families and community.
A glimpse into our origins and purpose
”The Kikuyu rite of passage (Irua) dates back to time immemorial (generations of Ndemi na Matathi). With the advent of the European invasion in the early nineteenth century, some Kikuyu cultural aspects became taboo or were frowned upon – in the eyes of the colonizer. And so the Irua tradition somewhat faded away in Kikuyuland. Circumstances and the reality of the nationhood brought to bear the conceptualization of a programme and ceremonies regarding the Irua ritual in modern-day Kenya.
